RESIDENTIAL BUILDING WITHIN SPECIFIC ARCHITECTURAL ENVIRONMENT
University of Sarajevo
ARCHITECTURE

Architecture is a reflection of thoughts, creation and culture of one time period. We are witnessing today's trend, where buildings with no sensibility for the environment in which they are placed, are created, what makes the overal image only a series of disharmonic small photos. That way, the identity of the urbo-architectural continuity of the wider scope is lost. We come to the question of finding the best way to interpolate new structures into the existing environment. Finding the way to enable the dialogue of the new and the old, without violating their own identities. The key to understanding is in the recognition that only in their unity and harmony we achieve the highest value of the urban environment. Sarajevo is famous through its rich spirituality, history and nature. The city with unique ottoman but also austro-hungarian architecture, and which managed to preserve the memory of previous periods and to enable their coexistence. The building within this project is placed precisely in such an environment, rich in the most beautiful examples of ottoman, austro-hungarian, but also architecture after World War 2. The concept of the project is based on both urban and architectural integration of completely contemporary architecture into the historical environment. The idea development moves from the block as a characteristic constituent part of the urban matrix typical for this part of the city.By using the positive-negative principle characteristic for the urban matrix external and interior spaces are interweaving as well as nature and built environment. The block is divided into several smaller volumes in order to maintain the proportion and scale with the facilities in the surroundings, but also in order to make the ''urban life'' enter into the block itself, where the atrium appears as one of the most significant characteristics of the architecture created in the ambient. The passages are designed to represent some sort of a funnel to the atrium, what makes it become the center of the public space, but still to maintain enough privacy. Residential-business function of the object is in the correlation with the transition of this part of the city from the residential to the business zone. Flexibility and transformability of the organization of space enables the adaptation of the building's purpose to current needs. The contrast method enables the display of the modern architecture spirit through volume, materialization and details. Also by following scales and respecting existing relations it achieved unity with surrounding.
