Aging, Landscape and the Rural Town
The notion ‘Herbst Leben’ (Autumn Life) refers to an existing magazine for aged inhabitants published in the town of Retz (Austria). This project consists of four imaginary future issues of ‘Herbst Leben’ telling you about the status quo of Retz in 2050.

Each issue reports on one out of four new infrastructures that are combinations of plain pedestrian roads, public space and landscape. In 2050 these infrastructures will provide mobility for an over-aged population that is increasingly unable to drive cars. Additionally, the nature of these infrastructures will motivate the aged inhabitants to remain active by travelling and meeting each other and thus prevent physical deterioration as well as social isolation.

As opposed to a concept that is super-imposed onto the town, the infrastructures develop out of context (a vast cultural landscape). They reveal, access and occupy the surrounding landscape making the town a close and worthwhile alternative to living in growing metropolitan areas for younger generations. Their immigration to Retz will in turn prevent the town from over-aging and shrinking to death.

The depiction of the revelation, the access and occupation of the landscape works with various graphical levels and scales: While detailed architectural section-drawings describe the complexity and aesthetics of the landscape, the simplicity of the actual interventions is shown and proven by sketch like hand drawings. The occupation of the landscape is shown by portraits of its users whose physical conditions and postures are the parameters of the interventions.

The imaginary future issues of “Herbst Leben” expand the fiction around the infrastructures by using texts telling you about everyday life. As a result, they don’t describe complete solutions but potentials of existing features, such as vine yards, streams, moats and cellars, changing the way of how the inhabitants perceive their own town in the present and how they continue to plan within it in the future.
